On my way to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, on board a BC Ferry on a gorgeous sunny day.
Disembarking in Nanaimo on my way north of the island, I
stopped by the small city, really a town of Campbell River facing the Georgia
Strait. I saw the 50th
Parallel sign and I had to pose. A lady
passerby took the pic.
According to Wikipedia, “the 50th parallel north, at this latitude the sun is visible for 16 hours, 22 minutes during the summer solstice and 8 hours, 4 minutes during the winter solstice – which is exactly 50th parallel south.
That puts Campbell River roughly between the city of London to the North at 51st, and Paris to the south at 49th. The 49th parallel also defines the US Canada border from British Columbia to Manitoba on the Canadian side, and from Washington to Minnesota on the American side.
